I am trying to run a website INDEPENDENTLY off my computer and router, but I don’t know how to, someone help?

I DON’T WANT to pay for a domain, I am aware you can host your own site using an IP as the domain name, but I don’t know how. DON’T link stupid sites where you pay for something you can do for free. I know for a fact the site will be very low traffic, the intent of it is for me and a couple of buddies to screw around with. I need instructions on how to get my HTML coded page that I have done myself, onto the internet, myself, without paying for something which does it for me. Do I need an FTP program? Will it use my routers IP? How do I use my routers IP to connect my saved notepad file to the internet? Will I need to forward any ports? So far the people of Yahoo Answers have failed to read my question and posted random links to domain buying sites, so someone READ this and answer the question please, will select best answer if it pertains to the question.

Basic steps: (assuming you have a web server software running)
1) Make sure your web server will “service” calls via IP. Some can be set to respond to URL only, though most will respond to IP..just check…
2) You can get a free URL name from places like DynDNS or DTDns or no-ip. Then point that name to your web server (your public IP address and port). They have tools that can run on your web server PC that keep your IP in sync with the URL name, just in case the IP changes.
If item 1) above works by IP, you can skip the URL name, but if your IP ever changes, your friends will have to call you to find out what your new public IP is…
3) You will have to make sure your PC hosting the web server is at a static LAN IP, so port forwarding always works. If you are using DHCP, the IP may change, and all forwarding will fail to find the IP it is looking for….
4) You have to open incoming port 80 and port forward that to the LAN IP address of your PC, on your router. Read up on port forwarding for your specific router model.

Some ISPs may block incoming port 80, to prevent home web servers. In that case, you may have to use anopther port, like 8080. Then, you have to make sure your web server listens on that port, and do all the port forwarding for that port instead.

You should be able to test access by http’ing to your public access from your internal LAN

otherwise, look at WAMP as an add-on for Windows.
I prefer the Linux option, as it is more stable – but you need a dedicated PC. Also, there is a web admin tool called ISPConfig, that works very well administering web sites and users on those Linux web servers.
